Steamed Dhokla

Dhokra is a very Gujarati dish, one that generations have been making. Each with their own twist. This dish when made well, melts in your mouth. It is a steamed fluffy yellow savoury cake.

My grandmother makes it from scratch. Mixing lentil flour, many different kinds along with some spices.
I used to do it that way, but I have found a cheat way. Which is instant, healthy and tasty. I make it all the time. It takes only 15 minutes from start to finish.
You will need;

  • GITS dhokla packet (available at most Indian grocery shops)
  • Coriander
  • Green chilies
  • Sesame seeds
  • Mustard seeds

Follow the instructions on the pack. Basically add water to the flour, to make a smooth thick batter, pour it into a cake dish and steam. While it cooks, chop the coriander and green chilli.

Heat oil in a pan once it is hot, add mustard seeds and sesame seeds, add in the coriander and chilies, stir the mixture. Season to taste. Give it a good mix and take it off the heat.

The dhokla should be ready with in 12-14 mins. Remove it from the dish and pour the coriander and chilly mixture on top.

Serve hot.
